Apple is testing software that allows you to unlock your iPhone with face recognition while wearing a mask – but only if you have an Apple Watch

With Apple’s iOS 14.5 update, you can use Face ID to unlock your phone when you are wearing a face mask. Apple is rolling out software that iPhone owners can use to unlock their devices with Face ID if they’re wearing a face mask, but only if they’re also wearing an Apple Watch. Currently, Apple offers three ways to unlock iPhones: passcodes, with your face using Face ID, and with your fingertips using Touch ID. Touch ID is only available on older phones, and Apple’s facial biometric recognition won’t work if you’re wearing a face mask. For many iPhone users, entering their passcode is the only option. However, the beta of Apple’s new iOS 14.5 update released on Monday includes an alternative. With the update, iPhone owners can use face recognition even if their face is covered by a face mask. You just have to make sure your Apple Watch is already unlocked and then look at your phone’s screen. Your watch will then buzz and the phone will unlock. You have to activate the function first. To do this, select “Settings” on your iPhone, then “Face ID and Passcode”. Aside from unlocking your phone, you can also use watch-based unlocking for Apple Pay, but this doesn’t work for all functions. For example, purchases from iTunes and the App Store still require a passcode. The news was first reported by Pocket-Lint.
