When it comes to the transfer market, Jurgen Klopp has one question to answer: how is he going to replace Georginio Wijnaldum ?
One of Liverpool’s most influential performers during his five seasons at the club, Wijnaldum’s switch to Paris Saint-Germain has deprived Klopp of a trusted lieutenant in midfield.
An integral part of the team which won the Champions League, Premier League, UEFA Super Cup and Club World Cup, he will be an extremely hard act to follow.
In the aftermath of Wijnaldum’s departure, Klopp admitted that it would be difficult to find someone as gifted. “I will miss the player he is like crazy – highest-quality ability, one of the smartest players I have ever had the privilege to coach,” he said. “His contribution was off the scale, a manager’s dream.”
If Liverpool are going to make amends for their disappointing title defence last season, however, Klopp will have to find a way to make up for Wijnaldum’s absence. Inevitably, that has seen the Reds linked with various midfielders.
The latest is Houssem Aouar, the Lyon playmaker also wanted by Arsenal and Tottenham. With that in mind, here’s Saturday’s Liverpool transfer round-up with all the latest developments.
Reds join battle for Aouar
Liverpool could join the clubs jostling to sign Aouar this summer, with Manchester United also looking to muscle in on Arsenal and Spurs.
As reported by Le10Sport , Arsenal have already submitted an initial offer but it has yet to be accepted. Where the Gunners have bid less than €20m (£17.1m), Lyon are holding out for up to €25m (£21.4m).
Arsenal attempted to sign Aouar last year but declined to meet Lyon’s valuation. Having failed to qualify for the Champions League for the second season in a row, however, the Ligue 1 club will accept a lesser fee.
That could tempt Liverpool to enter the bidding war, with Aouar seen as a potential successor to Wijnaldum. The Reds also have a longstanding interest in him, with Aouar stating a couple of years back that he had turned down a move to Anfield as a youngster.
Sarr could cost £40m
As well as strengthening in midfield, Klopp could look to add to his options out wide in the weeks to come.
That’s according to 90min , with the Liverpool boss apparently keen to sign Watford winger Ismaila Sarr.
Sarr scored twice against Liverpool during their surprise 3-0 defeat at Vicarage Road two seasons ago on their way to the Premier League title, grabbing Klopp’s attention.
While Liverpool were interested in signing him last year, they couldn’t convince Watford to agree to an initial loan deal. Now, though, the Reds would be willing to pay up to £40m.
Wilson has Premier League admirers
Liverpool academy graduate Harry Wilson is wanted by West Brom and Brentford , among others.
Portuguese giants Benfica also made an initial enquiry some time ago and, with Liverpool determined to move him on this summer, the Wales international is considering his options.
With the Reds looking to raise funds through player sales, several other squad members could depart including Marko Grujic, Xherdan Shaqiri, Loris Karius and Divock Origi.
They would accept £10m for Wilson, who has spent the last three seasons on loan at Derby County, Bournemouth and Cardiff City.
