If you’re a new employee, you probably have a lot to think about.

You need to impress your boss, socialize with co-workers (note to yourself: find an A.S.A.P. office) and prove that you are the next rising star. Sure, there are good examples of career goals, but you also need to think long-term. Of course, you never know where your career will go.

Your first job may fit well (fingers crossed!), Or it may make you guess the selected field. In any case, you want to create long-term work goals to steer your career in the right direction.

“You can always change your career direction, but you always have to work towards something,” says Jack Molisani, author of Be Your Career Captain: A New Approach to Career Planning and Advancement.

We’re not saying you need to map out a 40-year plan, but there are some global goals you should aim for.

1. Find Your Call “Some people are very money-motivated, but most want a career, not just a high salary,” Molisani says. This is especially true for millennia: 65% of them said they took their first job because they saw an opportunity for personal development, a study by PricewaterhouseCoopers showed. (Only 21% salary decisions.)

Early in your career, one of your most important tasks is to find the industry that best suits your goals. “Now is the time to explore different career paths,” said Barbara Safani, owner of Career Solvers, a New York job search consulting firm. “It’s harder to change fields later in your career when you have a family you support and need a steady salary.”

2. Develop Extensive Skills Many examples of career goals are based on improving your professional development. Today, you have a hard time finding a job that requires skill and only skill. “Employers want to hire people with different abilities,” Molisani says. Instead of focusing on what you want your job to be in five years, you need to focus on developing skills that will make you more marketable to future employers.

Start by improving your communication skills. Molisani recommends joining Toastmasters, which helps people sharpen their speeches. You may also want to attend a writing course because almost all fields require you to write something, be it an email or an annual report.

3. Set a training schedule Depending on the area you select, you may need to complete certain training, certification programs, or trainings.
