Arya Rajendran, a 21-year-old student, was set to become mayor of Kerala

The CPI (M) selected Arya Rajendran, 21, as its candidate for mayoral after the party’s district and state committees approved her candidacy. She is a first-time advisor to the Mudavanmugal Division of Thiruvananthapuram. Arya Rajendran is a BSc math student and a member of the party’s regional committee in Chala. She will be the youngest female mayor in the country – a step towards the party’s goal of bringing educated women to leadership positions. In the recently concluded local elections, the party won 51 seats on the 100-member council. The main opposition is the BJP with 35 seats. The UDF, led by the Congress, was relegated to third place with 10 advisors. There are four independent consultants in the company.
