There are several ways to convert a PDF file into a Word document, including using Word, Adobe Reader, or a dedicated website. However, not all of them are equally accessible.
If you want to do more than just edit a PDF file, you may convert it to a Word file and alter it in depth – something that was still impossible a few years ago due to the format’s closed nature – you have a few options.
Using Word 2013 or 2016
Users of Office 2013 or Office 2016 will be pleased to learn that their versions of Word can now open PDF files. Simply choose File, then Open, then select the PDF file to convert and click Open in Word. The text can then be modified, and the file can be saved in Word format (docx or doc, for example). However, keep in mind that some of the formatting from the original PDF file may not be preserved.
Check that the content of your new Word file matches the content of the PDF file when it arrives.
Adobe Reader is required.
The Adobe Reader software, which is designed to view PDF files, can convert them to Word format. All you have to do is go to File, then Save as another… Then go online and use Word or Excel. Then choose the file, format (docx or doc), and export to Word.
However, while the Adobe Reader software is free, the Adobe Export PDF function is not. It is available for 2.03 euros per month as a subscription.
With the help of a specialized website
There is still an online conversion option if you don’t have Word 2013 or 2016 and don’t want to pay. Many websites provide this service, with varying degrees of success.
The pdftoword.com site produces good results in general.
- Connect to https://www.pdftoword.com/ and select the starting and ending formats, which are by default PDF to Word, on the left side of the page.
- Select your file by clicking the Select Your File button, then select the PDF file you want to convert and click Open.
- Click Convert Now and provide your email address (a secondary address will suffice to minimize spam on your primary account).
You will receive an email with a link to download the file in Word format once the conversion is complete.
