Start of Phase 3 trials for Novavax vaccines in the US and Mexico

Clinical trials to determine the safety and efficacy of a COVID-19 vaccine candidate from US biotech company Novavax have begun in the US and Mexico, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) said on Monday. United States. A similar Phase 3 study for the same vaccine called NVX-CoV2373 is also ongoing in the UK, where around 15,000 volunteers have been recruited. In the United States and Mexico, the new studies will enroll approximately 30,000 volunteers over the age of 18. Two-thirds of the participants receive the vaccine and one-third a placebo. None of them will know what was in the injection they were given during the test. “The start of this trial – the fifth experimental COVID-19 vaccine candidate to be tested in a Phase 3 trial in the US – shows our determination to end the pandemic by developing several safe and effective vaccines,” he said Fauci, director of the National Institute for Allergies and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), which is part of the NIH.
