Russia admits higher death toll from COVID-19

Russia said Monday the coronavirus death toll was more than three times higher than before, making it the country with the third highest death toll. President Vladimir Putin has been speaking of Russia’s low death rate from the virus for months, saying earlier this month that it has weathered the pandemic “better” than Western countries. But since the pandemic began, some Russian experts have said the government downplayed the country’s outbreak. Russian officials admitted on Monday that this was true. Statistical office Rosstat said the number of deaths from all reasons, recorded between January and November, increased by 229,700 from the previous year.
