Scholarship Description: PhD Scholarship for International Students – NewCastle University’s School of Natural and Environmental Sciences is open to international students. The scholarship enables PhD programs in environmental science taught at the University of Newcastle. The grant period is. The EPSRC Doctoral Training Center (CDT) at Northeastern Renewable Energy Universities (ReNU) is a collaborative doctoral training program between the Universities of Northumbria, Newcastle and Durham. In addition to carrying out an individual scientific research project at one of the three partner universities as described below, doctoral candidates benefit from value-adding training opportunities, for example in the areas of business, innovation and research program to maximize the benefits of a cohort approach for doctoral training. This project will develop a path to photovoltaic devices that can compete with established silicon technology at a fraction of the cost. The proposed solution treats solar cells, can be fully assembled at a low temperature, is 1000 times thinner (i.e. light) and environmentally friendly. The past decade has seen increasingly intense research into lead-based perovskite solar cells, which has resulted in performance now superior to that of silicon photovoltaics, but the toxicity of the material limits its potential for commercialization. This project will develop a method of manufacturing devices that have the desirable properties of perovskite solar cells, but are assembled using precursors and non-toxic solvents and avoid the generation of toxic waste streams. The main features of the project are the combination of materials synthesis with sustainable approaches with solar cell assembly and testing to develop highly efficient yet environmentally friendly solar cells.
